Foam Marbling Art Technique
Thinking up new ideas and activities to keep the kids entertained can sometimes be a tad difficult. Additionally, factor in the need to keep costs to a minimum and it can really throw a spanner in the works but don’t worry as we’re here to help you. We have some great ideas for creative play using items you can easily find around the house, in fact even in the bathroom! So how does some shaving foam marbling art sound? It’s messy, it’s fun but it is so enjoyable too and little artists will be able to create some amazing results with just a little effort in no time at all.
Squirt paint on top of the shaving foam and swirl it using the end of a paint brush.
Place paper into the foam and paint mixture. Push down to ensure all areas are covered.
How to do marbling art
There are several different ways to create a marbling effect that you may be more familiar with, such as using paint that has been dropped onto an oil or starch or gel-based solution. Size really does matter!
Size is the technical term for the solution that paint is dropped onto during the process of marbling. If made to the correct, or thick enough, consistency the paint will float on the surface. It is made by mixing water plus gel together thoroughly. By carefully laying a piece of fabric or paper on top the paint will transfer creating intricate patterns.
The clever thing with shaving cream marbling art is that there is no need to make this as the foam acts as the ‘size’ solution meaning it is so much quicker to get started.
What is marbling in art?
Regardless of the type of paint or surface you are using, the primary aim is to create beautiful, swirled designs that produce a marble effect with streaking and veining along with areas that show a more mottled effect.
What do you use for shaving foam marbling art?
Most paints work well with the shaving foam such as watercolours and acrylics. You could even try some watered-down food colours to create the familiar marble designs. The best thing is to just get started and see what can be achieved. Stock up with everything you need here.
Shaving cream marbling art is incredibly popular. Simply squirt some into a wide flat tin foil tray or art dish, add drops of paint and carefully swirl using the handle of a brush or something with a similar smooth shape. You could use a finger but remember this will tend to create bolder chunkier designs.

• Use a smooth-surfaced material or paper
• Always scrape the shaving cream off the paper or card immediately
