How to make a pom pom?

The actual process of pom pom making is really simple and children of all abilities will be able to join in the fun. To get started you will need some card templates to use as a guide. We have made it extra easy for you. Simply download our FREE circle templates and use to cut out two circles to get started. (If you feel more confident you could use some bottle lids or a round object to trace some circles on to a piece of card. If you do this, you want to end up with a smaller circle inside the larger one. It should look a little bit like a swimming ring).

How to make a pom pom from wool

Whichever type of template you use the method of pom pom making is similar. Carefully cut the larger circle out with your scissors. The size or width of the larger one will determine the overall size of your creation so this is a good time to consider the finished item. Do you need smaller pompoms to stick onto a card or larger pompoms to make into a freestanding item?

To make a yarn pom pom, cut out the inside of the smaller circle, it may be easier to make a slit in the middle and then work outwards.

You’ll find just about everything you might need on our website.

Cut the wool into long strands and then begin to carefully wrap around the template making sure to keep your work smooth and neat. Continue until you have completely covered all of the card.

Take your scissors and using the two layers of card as a guide carefully cut through the wool beginning with the inner circle.

Take a single strand of wool and use to secure the pom pom and then cut through the remaining larger circle.

Next remove the pieces of card.

Once done finish the design you have chosen and decorate.
