Squeegee Art Technique

Why is squeegee art for kids popular?
This has to be one of the most adaptable forms of fun art activities and is ideal whether there’s a budding graphic designer in the family who wants to create something more complicated or a toddler who is just getting used to the process of painting. It is a fairly simple activity and can be enjoyed by all ages and all abilities.
How to do squeegee art
All you need is the following:
• Card or canvas
• Acrylic paint
• Squeegee
• Plastic or metal tray
Once you have everything assembled, lay the canvas or card onto the tray. The best squeegee painting techniques to use will depend on what you want to create. Something simpler with plenty of white space around or a more intense effect with most of the surface covered. Which will it be?
Add dots or lines of different paint colours randomly but make sure you leave large gaps between. Using the needle tip squeeze bottles will make this much easier. Keep to a maximum of three or four colours at first so it’s not too complicated. Then simply press the squeegee gently as you pass it over the surface starting from the top and working towards the bottom. If you need to repeat the process to cover the whole surface don’t forget to wipe the edge clean first so as not to smudge the colours.
Top Tip
For a paler effect press harder but for a bolder effect press more gently.

What is a squeegee used for in art?
In screen printing a squeegee is used to deliver the ink to the fabric or surface by forcing it via a series of holes. Using a household squeegee works in a similar way but it instead of squeezing the paint it smooths out the paint on the surface leaving a bold design. It may seem like a trivial house hold cleaning item but there are endless pictures to be made with just one. Don’t forget to clean the edge each time to ensure your design stays clean and tidy.
